Shops in Usk to Re-Open

Published: 22 June 2020

Monmouthshire County Council (MCC) have been planning for this event, in consultation with the Town Councils of the five Monmouthshire towns. They have had to plan with Government regulations and social distancing in mind and changes have to be made, no action is not an option.

The original MCC proposals for Usk were either to create a one way system around the town, or to close Bridge Street making a two way system, similar to the one used during the gas works. Usk Town Council could not support either of these options.

We suggested a third possible solution, the installation of traffic lights just for the length of Bridge Street. Our logic is that covering such a short distance the delay on the lights could be short so reducing the possibility of increased carbon emissions and tailbacks. MCC will then be able to create a single carriageway and widen pedestrian access.

We are pleased to say that MCC have listened to our concerns and agreed to trial the traffic light system.
We realise that some people will object to the lights but we believe that the alternatives would be wholly unacceptable to the majority of residents. We hope that you will support us, in what will be a temporary solution, to enable our businesses to re- open safely, both for them and for their customers.

Please shop locally and help our businesses to thrive again.
