Message from The Mayor of Usk
I was born in Liverpool, married at 20 and from there began a journey around the UK with my husband’s career in the Prison Service. That was how, in 1973, I first came to live in Usk. My three children spent the majority of their school years here and, as a family, we developed a real love for this town, a feeling that didn’t diminish after the inevitable move away. In 1995 I finally returned to settle here, a decision I have never regretted.
Through my working life I have been a teacher, a Community Development Officer and for the 15 years, before retirement, a Senior Manager for a leading Children’s Charity – Home Start. During that period I was responsible for the training and support of staff and Management Trustees in 22 schemes. My contacts were Directors of Social Services and Health, Assembly Members, MP’s and Ministers, helping to raise funds and awareness for the benefit of the families we supported.
Since retirement I have become very involved in the local community. I am a Deacon at Usk Baptist Church, a member of the Fairtrade Forum, on the committees of Silver Screen and the Memorial Hall.
I have had a varied life in terms of employment, the diversity of places that I have lived, from large cities to remote rural areas, have raised two sons and a daughter of whom I am immensely proud. I am also blessed with eight grandchildren and now a great granddaughter. I have known the pleasure and pain of being a carer for elderly parents. All of these experiences do, I believe, hold me in good stead in my role as Town Councillor. Through retirement I have both the time and energy to devote to the work of the Council.
This is my town, I feel very privileged to live here and immensely proud to serve as Mayor for a second time. I look forward to representing our town throughout the coming year which I will do to the very best of my ability.
During my year in office I will be raising funds for Ty Hafen, the Children’s Hospice in Wales, Friends of Chernobyl’s Children and the Junior section of Usk Town Band. Hopefully, with your help, I will be able to raise a substantial amount of money to present to these very deserving organisations at the end of my year as Mayor.Cllr Mrs Christine Wilkinson
