Two remarkable ladies, Diane Richards of Manor Court, and Ann Wilkinson, New Market Street, were bestowed with the ancient title of ‘Honorary Burgess of the Town of Usk.’  This title is bestowed upon persons deemed to have rendered singular service to the town, being the highest honour a town can bestow. The Mayor of Usk with all Town Councillors, Ann and Diane’s family and friends gathered at the Sessions House which was filled to capacity for the installation of their appointment. The Mayor Cllr Roger Galletley carried out the investiture presenting each with the insignia of an Honorary Burgess of Usk with all the rights and privileges appertaining to the office.  Diane and Ann both gave thanks in their speeches. Following the investiture, Diane and Ann had arranged a wonderful party at the Royal British Legion with a buffet, glasses of bubbly and entertainment.  It was a fantastic night and sincere thanks go to them both.  Diane finished her speech with these words. “I believe our characters are moulded by the people that touch us through our lives, so, if I am worthy of this award it is thanks to you all.”  All who know these two people, know just how special they are and why they are so deserving of this award

Congratulations to Usk in Bloom

Many congratulations to the Usk in Bloom team of volunteers. Once again they won their category (small country town) in the Wales in Bloom awards for 2014. The success is an acknowledgement of all their hard work throughout the season. Well done and a big thank you from everyone in the town, and all our many visitors, who benefitted from their dedication in creating the magnificent floral displays. Twyn Square was  particularly spectacular this year. Congratulations too to Marion Powell who won the award for the best front garden in Wales, this is the first year that such an award has been made.

Town Car Parks

Usk Town  Council will enter into negotiations with Monmouthshire County Council this Autumn to take over the ownership and management of the town's car parks. this has come about by the constant threat of charges being introduced, something that UTC is opposed to. As part of the terms of any exchange the car parks would need to be repaired and brought up to a good standard beforehand. Obviously the town council are looking for a favourable deal. If, for whatever reason the negotiations fail then UTC will continue to fight the introduction of any charges.
